Of all the things I made on Meet Your Maker, the directional danger indicators are my personal favourite. This is a standard gameplay feature, but it is also an important accessibility feature! The danger indicators mirror the sound cues from traps and guards, so players without sound are not disadvantaged when responding to threats.

I was the UI programmer on this feature, and as there were no UI Technical Designers on the project, I worked directly with the artist to create the desired look, as well as working with gameplay programmers to make them responsive and reflective of the game world. I also contributed to other areas of the combat HUD shown on screen in the following videos.

As a one-hit-kill game, Meet Your Maker does not have conventional damage indicators, only danger indicators. When guards target you, a danger indicator is displayed.

Explosives have their own dedicated danger indicators, updating in real time to show you nearby bombs – in yellow if they’re a safe distance away, and in red if they’re going to kill you.
